Animal Control Meeting

We had a great turnout for the animal control meeting the other night! 50 to 60 people showed up to discuss the issue.  Most of the turnout was from people that support the idea and were ready to get to work to make it happen.  A few people were more interested in the cost, only.  Over all, it was a good meeting and the issue was advanced in the county.

Animal Shelter in Pike County

There was a meeting concerning an animal shelter in Pike county last night.  Unfortunately, I was unable to attend and would like to get some information about that meeting.  Being such a rural county, it's easy for newcomers to think they can move in and open the front door to let Fido roam.  Lot's of reasons why that is a bad decision!  Just driving the roads and seeing the number of dogs killed by cars should deter anyone contemplating that course of action.  I am in favor of some sort of animal control in Pike, but I have my concerns about the members at the table in this discussion.  I read in the paper that HSUS was here.  I doubt they are here to help.  (That's a little like the saying, "I'm from the government, I'm here to help!")

HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) is my biggest concern. The do not own or operate one shelter.  They are a political, animal RIGHTS organization and push anti-hunting, anti-farming/ranching legislation.  In fact, given the opportunity to maintain the Animal Shelter in Washington, DC, they backed out. (in 1995).  They are a multi-million dollar international organization which supplies NO MONEY to shelters.    If they want to help, give us the money to put the shelter in- they have plenty ($200+million). I hope the paper was wrong and they are not here.  They are a big proponent of PETA, also.  PETA is the group that, it's alleged, supported the release of rats used in AIDS research. PETA's stated goal was never to see a restrained animal and for all Americans to be Vegans (pure vegetarians)- by law!  PETA is a big proponent of ALF (Animal Liberation Front).  I could go on and on.  Why do I care?  I raise and train and hunt and compete with my bird dogs.  You can see how my activities are anathema to HSUS and PETA.

Do we need animal control in Pike County- yes!   Do we need the likes of HSUS here- NO!   We can do this without the likes of them.  We should contact the American Humane Society.  They operate shelters, at least, and have a clear connection to ANIMAL WELFARE.

Saying of the Day

Lee University Choir

If you ever get a chance to see this amazing group of young, talented singers- do not pass it up!  It was a great time of singing and praise last night at Rock Springs Church.  We even had some interpretive dance going on! What a great way to start the week.

I was most impressed at seeing 98+ teenagers focused, committed, articulate and professional- all in one spot! It was encouraging, to say the least.

It was a pleasurable time, for sure.

Market on the Square

Don't anyone forget about the Market on the Square on Saturdays from 8-12 in Zebulon.  The best home grown food and other products- all summer long!

Sunday Church

After the Farmer's Market on Saturday, Sunday is a day of rest around my house. This is a great day around here!  Usually, everyone gets up, gets dressed and heads off the church.  Then the requisite after church lunch at the restaurant of your choice, and the afternoon-in-the-recliner Braves game.  There may be a little nap involved, too. What a system and refreshing way to prepare for the week!  I remember trying many other routines, but this one seems to suit me.  I hope that whatever your routine is on Sunday, that it involves worship in a church that suits you, too!

Oak Hill Church Tonight

Dogwoods Full Bloom
A couple of comedians and some good music tonight at Oak Hill Baptist Church.  I'll be there- it sounds like it will be a good time!

The Zebulon Post Office

Many places I am loathe to visit.  Dentist offices, oil change facilities, car dealerships and post offices are a few.  our Post Office in Zebulon is as close to fun as a post office can get!  You are greeted warmly and helped promptly.  If you are inclined, a little idle chit chat is thrown in for good measure.  If you are not inclined to chat, a quick "How you doin'?" may suffice. I just love the attitude and air of helpfulness I sense every time I am there.  You will, too!

The Kiwanis Club in Pike County is raising funds to help children in the county.  They meet at The Concord Cafe every Thursday at 1200.  It is a wonderful way to meet and greet the best in the county and help the children at the same time- as well as get a great lunch at the Concord Cafe.  I encourage you all to attend a meeting!

Latest Poll Results

The poll about Animal Control in  Pike County showed 11 total votes with 10 saying we need it now and 1 saying it was a complete waste of time.

New Poll online now- VOTE!

OK, OK!  I may have found something I really don't like about our home.  Pollen!  Every year I marvel at the waves of pollen form the pines.  When the wind blows, It just wafts across my pasture.  Yellow shirts and clothing is most appropriate this time of year, since, if you go outside at all, yellow will be all over  you anyway.  My allergies are awful, but, oddly, it's not due to the yellow pine pollen, but the oaks and sweet-gum pollen that is too small to be seen easily.

On a different subject, some good friends of mine have been married 31 years, today!  That is so great!  It makes me forget the pollen thing altogether!

Wow, the Easter plays around the county are many and varied.  I know they are a lot of work for the church members, but they are worth it! Keep up the good work you guys!

Spring Time Allergies

Is it only me that seems to be coping with a runny nose, itchy eyes and sneezing.  And to cut the grass will sometimes ruin a day with the sneezing and eye itching! (I tried to use that excuse to get BJ on the lawn mower- no luck!)  I sure wouldn't miss that part of Spring!
